Supply list for 5th grade and up

Check with each class, but in general this will be important to bring:

  • Spiral bound Multimedia drawing book. 9×12 is the ideal size for all projects. Whichever brand you choose, it needs to be a minimum of 85 lbs so we can watercolor in these.

The following supply list is required for all Realism Students

Must Have:

Drawing

  • Spiral bound Multimedia drawing book. 9×12 is the ideal size for all projects. Whichever brand you choose, it needs to be a minimum of 85 lbs so we can watercolor in these.
  • Pencils: Mono Tombow Pencils or Staedler Mars lumograph. pencil weights of 2B, B, HB, H, 2H – 4 each.
  • Paper Mate Tuff Stuff Eraser Stick (SN64801) or any similar stick eraser.
  • Pens: Pigma Micron black ink pens in .005, 01, .03 sizes
  • Yogurt or Sour Cream containers for brushes and water.
  • Paper towels.
  • Apron or large t-shirt – Remember, acrylic paints leave forever stains.

Optional Materials not required first day.

Acrylic Painting

  • For beginners: Acrylic paints (required): Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red Medium Hue, Yellow Ochre, Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue, Magenta (or Quinacridone red).
  • Repeat and ongoing students: Additional colors or your own choice such as “Blick Studio Acrylic Paint and Sets” is a good value and a great set. If not these, stay away from student brand paints and get studio or artist level quality.
  • Paint palette:  Flat to go microwavable containers with covers are ideal or a plastic plate.
  • Repeat and ongoing students: Acrylic paint retarder to slow drying time.
  • Multimedia sketchbook 9×11″
  • Blue tape
  • Paper towels
  • Brushes
  • Area and clothing you can be messy in or spill and not ruin something important.

Oil Painting

  • Box of nitrile gloves that fit you or your child.
  • Gamblin 1980 oil colors: Ultramarine Blue, Napthol Red (or Cadmium Red HUE), Yellow Ochre, Titanium White, Hansa Yellow Light (or Cadmium Yellow Medium HUE), Magenta (or Quinacridone red), and a Burnt Umber. 1.25 oz is an acceptable size for all tubes except white. Get a larger amount of white than the rest of the colors.
  • Brushes:  There are many different types of brushes. When looking for brushes keep in mind that natural bristols will be better for learning the basics. For the beginner we will primarily use 3 different brushes.
    » Rounds – sizes 0 or 2
    » Filberts – sizes 4 and 6
    » Flat Brushes – sizes 8 or 10
I prefer Trekell brushes, but Robert Simmons 785 series white sable are excellent value.
  • Paint palette acrylic plastic, encased glass or wood.
  • Gamblin Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits. For all beginning students I do not recommend turpenoid and never use turpentine.
  • Airtight Brush Metal Brush Cleaner/Washer or Silicoil brush cleaner – fill it about half an inch above the coils with Gamsol.
  • Pre-primed canvas or panels. You can also purchase canvas pads.
  • Vellum is required for beginning assignments – Paper will not work. Oil paints will destroy paper by leaching into it and rotting it away.
  • Wet Panel & Canvas Carrier.
  • Silicone sponge.
  • Small clamps to hold paintings to easel.

Suggested:

  • Mono Zero Eraser – Tiny eraser that brings massive control to drawings!
  • Pencil Extenders – when pencils get short this extends their life.
  • Watercolors – Watercolor pan set of your choice.
  • Gouache – https://www.dickblick.com/products/talens-art-creation-gouache-sets/
  • Mini travel spray bottle – a must have for painting.
  • Watercolor plastic palette, for watercolors and gouache. We’ll use paper plates for acrylic.
  • Color Pencils – Get a good set of 24 or 36 colors.
  • Brushes – A package of assorted synthetic brushes. Synthetic brushes last much longer.

Art Lover Extras:

  • Pencil art case for all of this stuff – keeps supplies organized and travel safe.
  • Kneaded Eraser.
  • Afmat pencil sharpener is the best for artists and are an excellent product.
